REPUBLIC OF KOREA

The number of people who contracted MERS since an outbreak began in Republic of Korea last month increased to 150, with 15 deaths. Media report that over 70 cases were traced to a single hospital. A joint World Health Organization (WHO) and MOH mission to review the outbreak indicated that while the outbreak is large and complex, it shows a similar pattern to previous hospital-associated MERS outbreaks in the Middle East. Such outbreaks were fully controlled by strong basic public health measures. The mission confirmed there was no evidence the virus was circulating in the community at large.
The joint WHO-MOH mission concluded on 13 Jun.

15 people dead

According to the WHO, the strain of coronavirus that causes MERS was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia.

PACIFIC

Meterological agencies report the commencement of an El Niño in the Pacific Ocean from May 2015. Models predict that El Niño will last to the end of 2015 and possibly into 2016. As ocean temperatures continue to warm it is estimated that parts of the Pacific will experience reduced rainfall.

Previous El Niños were linked to drought and reduced monsoon conditions in affected areas. Drier conditions can be expected particularly in the Philippines, PNG, India, Nepal, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Tonga, and Niue. Extended drought conditions could lead to food and water scarcity and impact sectors such as agriculture and tourism.

Other ongoing emergencies:

Philippines: Zamboanga crisis

Myanmar: Rakhine crisis

Myanmar: Kachin crisis
